There are 3 types of UV rays: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-A rays have cumulative effects on the human body (long term) by penetrating deep into the human skin creating a more rapid aging process by accelerating wrinkling, “sun spotting”, and is associated with about 90% of all skin cancers. UV-B, however, breaches the top layer of skin and is associated with sun burns and blistering. UV-C is absorbed by the Earth’s ozone and does not present a threat. Knowledge of the effects of infrared radiation (heat) on skin is limited, but recent science shows IR/heat exposure damages skin cells and disrupts dermal structural proteins, which adds to premature skin aging. UV and infrared rays don’t only affect the human skin, but play a key role in the health of our eyes and vision. If you are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation in a short period of time you can/may have experienced photo keratitis, in other words, a sunburn of the eye; symptoms include red eyes, unnatural bodily sensation in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and uncontrollable tearing. Photo keratitis is almost always temporary, rarely causing permanent damage to they eyes, but the longer your eyes are exposed to solar radiation, the greater the risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration later in life.
